Course Descriptions

Beginning and Intermediate conversational French for those who are planning a trip or simply seeking an introduction to the spoken form of the language as it is used in everyday situations.

Instructor Bio

Doughlas Remy earned a BA degree in French from Louisiana State University and an MA degree in French from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught beginning and intermediate French at both universities while working on these degrees. He lived in Montpellier for a year and spent summers in Paris and Aix-en-Provence.

Participant Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the beginning course, students will be able to do the following:

  • Exchange greetings

  • Introduce themselves

  • Explain where they are from and what they do

  • Use forms of politeness

  • Ask for and understand simple directions

  • Use numbers

  • Discuss prices

  • Discuss the weather

  • Reserve a hotel room

  • Give the time (E.g., It’s 2:30 pm.)

  • Identify the days of the week and the months of the year

  • Perform simple shopping tasks

  • Identify simple everyday objects

  • Identify the basic properties of objects by color, shape, and size

  • Use directional words (prepositions) to describe position or movement.

The intermediate course will reinforce and expand skills taught in the beginning conversational French course. In addition, students who complete this course will be able to do the following:

  • Order a meal in a restaurant

  • Discuss travel arrangements (by air, by car, and by train)

  • Find housing

  • Exchange currency

  • Send mail at the post office

  • Buy clothing

  • Visit the coiffeur

  • Discuss sports

  • Take a taxi

  • Discuss their work or leisure activities

  • Use simple past and future tenses to describe actions

  • Use and understand common idioms

Course Materials

Students are required to purchase “French the Easy Way,” Fourth Edition, published by Barron’s Educational Series, Inc. This book is available from Amazon.com.
